CES is just days away and as usual we’re starting to see a variety of products trickle out before their CES debut. One such product is the Archos TV Connect, which was officially unveiled today and will ship this February for $ 130.
In a nutshell, the Archos TV Connect converts any TV with an HDMI port into a Android based Smart TV. And while many already own a Smart TV, the TV Connect should prove to be vastly faster and more powerful than any of Samsung or LG’s default versions, which generally speaking are painfully slow. So, even if you own a set with the aforementioned feature, this is still worth a solid look.
That said, I haven’t had a chance to use the Archos TV Connect, so it’s rather difficult to comment on its all together quality. They are however including a tactile remote with the system that allows for gestured commands by combining the movement of two joysticks. There is also a full QWERTY keyboard, and game buttons and controls that can be mapped (presumably using the same tech found in their Gamepad) accordingly.
Since the Archos TV Connect is Android based, all of Google Play Store’s app should be at your disposal. Furthermore, the TV Connect is fully compatible with all the major media codecs, includes the latest in connectivity (WiFi, uPnP, DLNA), and sports a USB Host and microSD card slot in case your buddy drops by with a movie. Lastly, the TV Connect has a built-in webcam, which is compatible with Skype and those alike. The system sits on top of the TV set, so provided it’s eye level to the viewers, it should work as a video phone.
